Concrete cutting

6 tips for effective concrete saw cutting

Diamond blades are encrusted with diamond bits made to cut through hard or abrasive materials such as concrete, asphalt, bricks and ceramics. With the right technique, they’re the most effective way to saw through concrete. Here’s how to do it.

1. Select the correct blade

Make sure your blade is rated for the material you’re cutting. Using a blade with a bond that’s too hard for the material will result in loss of cutting power due to the blade glazing. This happens when the bond isn’t stripped away to expose new diamonds.

2. Decide on your cutting method

When cutting into concrete, you have two options: dry cutting or wet cutting. Wet cutting is preferable, as water prevents the blade from overheating, reduces the amount of dust and extends blade life.

If wet cutting isn’t an option (as is the case with electric saws), dry cutting does the job but you’ll need to take extra precautions. Make sure to back the blade off every 30 to 45 seconds to prevent overheating. You’ll also need to wear a respirator mask to avoid dust inhalation.

3. Inspect the saw

If the diamond blade has been used before, make sure it isn’t warped and that there’s no damage to the arbor hole. Also, inspect all of the other key components of the saw such as belts, bolts and so forth. If your saw is electric, check the power cord. If it’s a saw that will used for wet cutting, make sure that water flows freely down sides of the blade.

4. Wear protective gear

Always wear the appropriate shoes and clothing. Also, never cut without eye, ear, head and respiratory protection.

5. Have a plan

Err on the side of caution and measure out your cutting line several times before marking it. Cleanly mark out the cutting line. If you’re wet-cutting, use a crayon as chalk washes off.

6. Don’t force the blade

Let the saw do the work and simply guide the blade in the direction of the cut. Never try to steer it left or right. This is dangerous and can damage the blade and the saw.
